Welcome to Ash & Root: A Return to Our Roots

Many roots. Many stories. A tapestry of remembrance.

There is something powerful about remembering who we are.

Before the labels. Before the expectations. Before the world told us which parts of ourselves were acceptable, which traditions were worthy, and which stories deserved to be told.

Our ancestors were here.

They loved. They struggled. They created. They celebrated. They passed down knowledge, protected their communities, and carried traditions through generations of change.

Some of those traditions survived. Others were silenced, displaced, or forgotten.

But our stories did not begin with their erasure.

Ash & Root Curios was born from a simple belief: our roots deserve to be remembered, explored, and honored.

Across Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, our histories are distinct.

Our languages, spiritual traditions, ancestral practices, and cultural expressions are uniquely our own.

And that is precisely what makes them beautiful.

We do not need to share the same ancestry to recognize the sacredness of one another's stories. We do not need to practice the same traditions to stand together in mutual respect.

We are different threads in a much larger tapestry.

Each one has a place. Each one has a story. Each one matters.

Reconnection Begins With Curiosity

What did our ancestors believe?

Where did our families begin?

What knowledge was passed down, and what was lost along the way?

How much of what we believe about ourselves was inherited from our communities, and how much was shaped by a world that did not always honor them?

These questions are invitations, not instructions.

We believe the journey of ancestral discovery belongs to the individual.

Our purpose is to help make room for that journey.

Through genealogy resources, cultural exploration, ancestral reflection, and thoughtfully curated curios, we hope to encourage people to reconnect with the stories and traditions that speak to them.

Ancestral reverence does not require a particular religion, ritual, or spiritual practice. Sometimes it begins with learning a grandmother's maiden name. Finding an old photograph. Discovering the village where a great-grandparent was born. Preparing a family recipe. Learning the history behind a tradition.

Or simply asking a question that no one thought to ask before.

These moments matter.

They remind us that our lives are connected to stories much older than ourselves.

And for those whose histories have been interrupted by adoption, displacement, enslavement, migration, or separation, the journey may look different.

There is no single path back to our roots.

Ash & Root is rooted in reverence, not hierarchy.

We honor the people preserving languages, protecting ancestral lands, documenting forgotten histories, and keeping cultural knowledge alive.

We honor the storytellers, the elders, the healers, the historians, and the curious souls just beginning to ask where they come from.

And we recognize that honoring another community's traditions means respecting its boundaries, its knowledge keepers, and its right to tell its own story.

Our purpose is not to weave every thread ourselves. It is to recognize the beauty and sacredness of each one.

The Journey Begins Here

This blog is an invitation to explore.

We'll share resources for tracing family histories, reflections on ancestral connection, cultural education, and conversations about reclaiming the parts of ourselves that deserve to be remembered.

You don't need to know where your journey will lead.

You only need the curiosity to begin.

Welcome to Ash & Root Curios.

May you find meaning in the stories behind you, belonging in the life before you, and reverence for every thread along the way.

Stay rooted.
